FAA Neuropsychological Evaluations

FAA neuropsychological evaluations are conducted with the goal of measuring cognitive and psychological functioning as required by the FAA to determine eligibility for medical (re)certification or Special Issuance.  These evaluations are conducted with individuals ages 16 and older who are seeking First, Second, or Third-Class medical certificates or other aviation-related employment.

Evaluations may include measurement of the following:

  • Overall intellectual functioning
  • Academic achievement (reading, writing, mathematics)
  • Attention and concentration
  • Learning and memory
  • Language functioning
  • Visuospatial functioning
  • Executive functioning
  • Motor functioning
  • Adaptive functioning
  • Personality and emotional functioning

The specific domains measured will depend on your case, as well as on the requirements set forth by the FAA.

The first step in the evaluation process is typically an introductory phone call to discuss the evaluation process and schedule the evaluation.  You will then be enrolled in our patient portal, through which you will complete new patient paperwork and receive an extensive Personal History Questionnaire.  The Personal History Questionnaire will allow you an opportunity to gather necessary information regarding your current and historical functioning and provide this information to Dr. Sutton prior to your evaluation.

The evaluation will be conducted in-person with Dr. Sutton in her office in Hampstead, North Carolina (located less than 15 miles from Wilmington International Airport).  The evaluation will be conducted across the span of either one or two days, depending on (1) what neurocognitive domains are required to be measured by the FAA and (2) the client's preference.  You may find information about nearby lodging here.

Please note that all FAA neuropsychological evaluations are self-pay only and may not be billed to the client's insurance, as occupational evaluations are not considered by insurance companies to be medically necessary.  The exact cost of the evaluation will depend on the protocol requested by the FAA.

All services are provided directly by Dr. Sutton.  Please contact us to learn more information or to discuss scheduling an evaluation.  We look forward to working with you!
